EPILOGUE

MICHELLE CLUNG TO Colin’s hand as they stood inside her yard chatting to Lieutenant Trammell. The sun had burst through at ten o’clock this morning—had to be a record for this week.

Lieutenant Trammell was shaking his head. “Yeah, if we’d had Brunswick’s DNA, we could’ve wrapped this up a lot sooner.”

“You should’ve told me you guys had collected a hair sample from both crime scenes. I could’ve suggested a few suspects to check out.” Colin pulled her closer until they were shoulder to shoulder.

“We should’ve listened to you earlier about those two other murders, Roarke.”

Michelle squeezed Colin’s hand. “I can’t believe Larry had been in trouble with prostitutes before, beating them. Any whiff of a scandal like that and he’d have lost his teaching job.”

“That’s why his father-in-law, the judge, covered it up for him, made it go away.” Trammell rolled his eyes. “Friends in high places.”

“And Nick’s okay?”

“The boy’s spooked but fine. He didn’t realize Brunswick was the killer, but when Brunswick ran him off the road that day, he was afraid to cross him.”

A tremble rolled through Michelle’s body and Colin wrapped an arm around her. He pointed to Columbella House. “How badly did the fire damage it?”

“It’s not as bad as it could’ve been. That room contained most of it, including Brunswick’s crispy body.”

Michelle turned her head into Colin’s shoulder.

“Mia St. Regis is going to have to come back and do something about the house or the city’s going to condemn it.”

“Thanks for the update, Lieutenant.” Colin stuck out his hand, and it was a dismissal.

They shook hands and Lieutenant Trammell sauntered back to his car.

“Cops need to be more careful in the way they talk about crime scenes to civilians.” He rubbed her back and kissed the side of her head.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to get the sound of Larry’s scream out of my head.”

“We’ll just have to fill it with more pleasant sounds.” He tapped her temple.

“So when are you going back to work?” Michelle held her breath. They’d already agreed to a long-distance relationship until they could work out the details of their work situations, but Michelle couldn’t bear to be apart from him so soon.

“You mean I didn’t tell you?”

The breath puffed from her lips and she slugged his shoulder. “No.”

He laughed. “I’m extending my vacation to coincide with yours. My boss was damned grateful I solved those two other murders. He would’ve handed me anything… but all I want is more time with you.”

“That’s great.” She hugged him and kissed his mouth. She’d been initiating kisses a lot lately. “Where are we going?”

“Someplace warm and tropical where the sun shines all day long.”

“Hawaii?”

“Let’s do it.”

Hand in hand they turned toward Michelle’s house. She stuck her other hand in the pocket of her shorts and felt the bracelet. She pulled it out and dangled it in front of her where it caught the sunlight and winked back at her.

“Look. It’s the bracelet you found in the basement at Columbella House. It belongs to Marissa or Mia.
